The Weight Loss Blog

By Peter Girardi 23 May, 2023
In recent years, the scientific community has uncovered a fascinating connection between endotoxins, obesity, and gut health. The gut, often referred to as our "second brain," plays a crucial role in various aspects of our overall well-being, including weight management. In this blog post, we will delve into the relationship between endotoxins, obesity, and how bariatric surgery can help restore balance to the gut, paving the way for sustainable weight loss and improved health. Understanding Endotoxins and their Impact on Obesity: Endotoxins are toxins produced by certain types of bacteria in our gut, primarily from the gram-negative bacteria family. In obese individuals, the gut microbiota composition is altered, leading to increased levels of endotoxins in the bloodstream. These endotoxins can trigger low-grade inflammation, disrupt metabolic processes, and contribute to weight gain and obesity. Understanding the role of endotoxins is crucial in addressing the root causes of obesity. The Gut Microbiota and Weight Management: The gut microbiota, composed of trillions of microorganisms, plays a significant role in maintaining our overall health. Imbalances in the gut microbiota, such as an overgrowth of harmful bacteria or reduced diversity, have been linked to obesity. The disruption of the delicate balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria can contribute to increased inflammation, impaired metabolism, and weight gain. Restoring this balance is essential for sustainable weight loss. Bariatric Surgery: A Game-Changer in Gut Health and Weight Loss: Bariatric surgery, including procedures like gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery, not only aids in weight loss but also has a profound impact on gut health. These surgical interventions modify the digestive system, leading to changes in gut hormone production and the composition of gut microbiota. Studies have shown that bariatric surgery can help restore a healthier gut microbiota profile by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria and reducing harmful bacterial populations. This positive shift in the gut microbiota has been associated with improved metabolic health and sustained weight loss. The Long-Term Benefits of Bariatric Surgery on Gut Health: Beyond initial weight loss, bariatric surgery offers long-term benefits for gut health and overall well-being. The reduction in endotoxin levels due to improved gut health can help alleviate low-grade inflammation, reduce insulin resistance, and enhance metabolic function. These factors contribute to long-lasting weight loss maintenance and a decreased risk of obesity-related comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver disease. Supporting Gut Health After Bariatric Surgery: Following bariatric surgery, adopting a healthy lifestyle and dietary changes are vital to support gut health and optimise weight loss outcomes. Incorporating prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods, increasing dietary fiber intake, and avoiding processed and sugary foods can further promote a healthy gut microbiota. Regular follow-up appointments with healthcare professionals, including dieticians and surgeons, will ensure ongoing support and guidance for sustained gut health and weight management success. Conclusion: The connection between endotoxins, obesity, and gut health underscores the importance of addressing gut imbalances for sustainable weight loss and improved overall health. Bariatric surgery offers a transformative solution by not only aiding in weight loss but also positively influencing gut microbiota composition. By restoring the gut balance through bariatric surgery and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, individuals can achieve long-term weight loss and a healthier future. FAQ

If you are overweight or obese, with a BMI > 30 and obesity related diseases such as Diabetes, Sleep Apnoea or have tried to suppress your weight  with medications or diets and exercise, then Weight Loss Surgery may be the answer you are looking for. • What Types of Surgery Do You Perform?

New England Weight Loss Clinic focuses on Gastric Sleeve surgery which provides a consistent result and comparative low risk versus other weight loss procedures. The procedure is generally well-tolerated with the least impact on your diet. We also offer gastric bypass and minimisation rings for weight loss, as well as removal excess skin around the arms, thighs, abdomen and breast post weight loss. • Will my Private Health Insurance covers my surgery

Private health insurance often covers the costs associated with bariatric (weight loss) surgery if patients have top level (Gold) hospital cover and meet certain criteria. Even then with some surgeons you can expect to pay between $3000 and $7000 on top of your insurance. Obesity is considered a pre-existing condition for most patients, therefore with private health funds, you are usually required to hold your policy for between 12-24 months to be eligible for surgery. Contact your health insurance to find out whether or not you are covered for weight loss surgery based on your level of cover.

  • Can I use my Super to pay for Weight Loss Surgery?

Given the health problems and reduced life expectancy associated with obesity, you are able to access your superannuation to fund the costs of weight loss surgery, regardless of your age or whether you have health insurance. You or another family member's superannuation may be used to cover the costs involved in bariatric surgery. The application for early super release is processed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO). For early access of your super for compassionate reasons, you need to apply to the ATO. If the ATO approves your application, you can only receive enough money to pay for your expenses. Some other examples of procedures that your super fund may pay for include: Abdominoplasty, lipectomy, Brachioplasty, Thighplasty, Breast lift and other body contouring procedures after drastic weight loss.

  • Why Do I Need an Assessment?

Like any surgical procedure, Weight Loss Surgery has serious risks associated. Our pre-operative assessment determines whether weight loss surgery is in fact your best option and that all the risks are explained in detail and mitigated through carefully understanding your unique situation. It also allows the opportunity to identify any other underlying cause for your obesity that may be treated without surgery, as well as ensuring your health is optimised before surgery. Providing you with all the information to help you understand the pre and post operative diet, procedure and the risks ensures a safe weight loss journey.

  • What Diet Should I Consider After Surgery?

One of highly-experienced, local Dietitians will discuss the post-operative diet at regular visits both before and after surgery. We generally recommend a low-carbohydrate diet which encourages breakdown of fat through ketosis, using fat to fuel your body. This is combined with fasting at various points in the weeks, months and years after your surgery which is  uniquely tailored for you to maintain a healthy weight, instead of adopting a one size fits all approach to weight loss.

  • Can I use my Super for excess skin excisions after weight loss?

Some examples of procedures that your super fund may pay for include: Abdominoplasty, lipectomy, Brachioplasty, Thighplasty, Breast lift and other body contouring procedures after drastic weight loss.
